WHAT TO EXPECT
STEP 1
The first step to having Ortho-K treatment is to book an assessment consultation with our optometrist. At this consultation we will examine your eyes thoroughly, checking your prescription and the health of your eyes, as well as taking highly precise eye surface scans with our corneal topographer — this information is used to help determine your eyes' suitability for Ortho-K and to design your fully customised Ortho-K lenses. We will discuss with you the pros and cons of Ortho-K treatment for your individual situation, give you plenty of information and answer any questions you may have, so you can make an informed decision. |
STEP 2
Once you have decided to proceed with Ortho-K, we will design and order your fully customised lenses using sophisticated software and topographical data captured from your eye surface scans. The lenses are uniquely yours. The manufacturing time for your individual set of Ortho-K lenses is around 2 weeks. |
STEP 3
When your Ortho-K lenses are ready we will schedule a fitting and delivery appointment for you. This visit will take about 1 hour. We will assess the fitting of the lenses on your eyes and guide you through how to insert, remove and take care of your lenses. Your Ortho-K treatment package comes in a deluxe kit with everything you need to get started. For a child we also ensure the parents are fully involved in the process. |
STEP 4
After your first night of Ortho-K lens wear, we will review you the next morning to check the health of your eyes and start monitoring treatment effect. You should notice some improvement in your vision already after the first night, but optimum treatment effect can take 1-2 weeks to reach, depending on your pre-treatment prescription and eye shape. You may experience some ghosting or halos in your vision initially, especially at night, which will tend to subside over time. The comfort of your Ortho-K lenses will also improve with time as you adapt to wearing them. |
STEP 5
We will continue to monitor your Ortho-K treatment closely. You can expect a few visits in the beginning — the typical review schedule is after 1 night, 1 week, 3 weeks, 2 months, 4 months and 6 months. At each of these visits we will measure your corneal topography, check your vision, eye health, and assess lens fitting and lens condition — ensuring the safety of the treatment. We will let you know how your Ortho-K treatment is going and show you the changes in your corneal shape at your reviews (see image below). All consultation visits in your first year of Ortho-K wear are included in the Ortho-K Fitting Program fee. |
STEP 6
After the first 6 months, regular Ortho-K and eye check ups are every 6 months. For children wearing Ortho-K lenses for myopia control, we monitor the child's myopia progression at these visits to determine the effectiveness of myopia treatment. Ortho-K lens replacement is recommended every year for best eye health, vision and comfort. |
